Ashes to Ashes

This recording is a record breaker for its brevity! The poem is about the coming to power of Trump. I’ll leave you all to work out your own interpretations.

Ashes to Ashes

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

A body shuffles off its mortal coil

And pierces motherly, earthly crust

Leaving strife behind and worldly toil

Flesh and bone slip to oblivion

While mourners file through the funereal pavilion

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

Another cycle of civilisation

Industries buried in a belt of rust

Patriotic pride of a once-new nation

That seeks to make itself great again

But is bound to find only populist pain

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

People and their leaders come and go

However much for power they lust

There is time to reap and time to sow

Time for majorities to call for change

Time when results are especially strange

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

The denial of all things rational

By those who in their own god trust

And wallow in all things national

They are the ashes of a burnt-out glory

Just another historian’s dust-jacket story
